Don’t be fooled by the naysayers that confuse email marketing with SPAM. In fact, that couldn’t be further from the truth since email marketing has the highest Return on Investment (ROI) of any advertising channel around.
Jonah Kadish, Managing Director of DeeMoc, provider of the DeeMocDIY Email Marketing Platform, tells you how to tap into this burgeoning marketing medium.
Social networking, Twitter and other forms of social advertising might be the big buzz words but what you might not know is that email marketing is still the most dependable workhorse in your arsenal.
4 Tips to make email marketing work for you:
1. Use an Email Service Provider (ESP)
ESPs are experts in email, do yourself a favor and enlist their help. These companies exist solely to help you succeed with your email campaigns.
Digital marketing is a unique blend of technology and marketing. ESPs are staffed with the right people to bridge this gap and guide you on what to do and more importantly, what not to do. If you try it on your own the learning curve is steep and you risk making a lot of costly and time consuming mistakes. Finding the right ESP partner will help you go from zero to hero fast.
The best way to find an ESP is to do an internet search for “Email Service Provider”. Shop around to find a company that matches all your needs. A reputable ESP does not allow their clients to send messages to rented or purchased lists. If an ESP does follow that practice, they are not targeting your needs and basically turning your message into SPAM. A few ESPs worth mentioning are MailChimp, Constant Contact and DeeMocDIY.
2. Build a Permission Based List – don’t be a SPAMmer
In the world of email marketing SPAM is a bad word, and it’s for good reason. Depending on your location some forms of SPAM are illegal and even legal forms of SPAM are often filtered out by IPSs relegating the email to junk folders which recipients rarely see.
Your messages are not junk, so it goes without saying, you don’t want to be considered SPAM. If you send an email to someone that did not explicitly request information, you are spamming them. A good rule of thumb is to have recipients sign up to receive your email or opt-in to your lists – now you’re building a Permission Based List.
This brings me to a very important point, never under any circumstances buy, rent, borrow or use a list from any source other than your own permission based list. And yes, this includes Chamber of Commerce and other seemingly high-level approved lists. The primary reason for this is that when you buy or rent an unsolicited list you create an expense for your business, although it may seem faster and cheaper in the beginning, these lists provide little in the way of ongoing sustainable benefits.
By creating and using your own permission based list, you are building an invaluable asset for your business that ensures the success of your campaigns now and in the future. So remember your A.B.C’s - Always Be Collecting – just make sure you practice them in an ethical and permission based way.
3. Content is King – Target your Message
Here is a very simple rule, make sure you send relevant offers and information to relevant people. A list with 100 targeted people will outperform a list of 100,000 random names every time, with results you can see.
We’re bombarded everyday to a point of overload – people scan not read web content – so don’t get lost in the shuffle. Make your emails simple and to-the-point with an option to read more by following a link. Stick to your target offers and core business and you can’t go wrong. Only use cross promotions when they enhance your offers, or provide real benefits to your customers. Great content gets forwarded while lame content gets deleted, or worse, users unsubscribe.
4. Improve Over Time by Tracking Your Results
People always ask me “what’s a good open rate” or “what’s a good click through rate”? There’s no correct answer, instead just get started, build a benchmark and make sure you improve every time you hit the send button.
Digital marketing is great because when done right it gives immediate feedback and allows you to focus on improvements going forward. Perfection is a process not a destination, so ensure every message you send is better than the last. If, at any time, you think you are getting bad results talk to your ESP to find out why and what can be improved. It’s another benefit of using an ESP!
Now that you the basics, go find your ESP and get started. Don’t delay because every day you’re not sending or building your permission based list, you’re losing a stronghold on your market.
